Qualcomm Accidentally reveals Nokia 8 at CES 2017

Recently, two videos from the CES 2017 claimed that Qualcomm used Nokia’s yet-to-be-announced smartphone to demo its chipset.

Just a few days after two videos claimed that Qualcomm had accidentally revealed the next Nokia smartphone while demoing its latest Snapdragon 835 processor, the chip-maker has officially dismissed the report. The two videos, shared by Total Tech, which were shot at the recently concluded CES 2017 claimed to give a glimpse of what was touted to be the Nokia 8 smartphone running the latest processor.

However, Qualcomm has issued a statement to NokiaMob, in which it says, “We do not disclose details of our reference design. We’ve seen a few stories rumouring what we demonstrated in our CES booth to be a Nokia device, those reports are not accurate, our 835 demos were on our own reference design devices which we use to demo our Snapdragon SoC’s every year.”

With such a clear response that it was indeed a reference design and not a final product, the videos stand false at the moment. Nonetheless, one needs to take both sides of the story with a pinch of salt because if it is a reference design, it still has the possibility of turning into a final product.

The particular videos in question focused on the camera prowess of the purported Nokia 8 aka Nokia Supreme smartphone. In one video, the smartphone is said to feature a 24-megapixel camera with OIS and EIS support. The flagship smartphone is further claimed to come in a variant that will house a Snapdragon 821 chipset and a lesser megapixel camera. The second video goes on to talk about how the latest EIS 3.0 with the newer chipset offers more stability and lag-free camera recording capabilities. If the speculations are to be believed, the Nokia 8 could feature two front speakers, Super AMOLED quad HD display.

Earlier reports indicated that the rumored Nokia 8 smartphone could be the company’s response to high-end smartphones from the likes of Samsung and Apple. It is speculated that the Nokia 8, from the company’s first set of Android smartphones, could come with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage with option to further take up the storage.

HMD Global, which will now be selling and marketing Nokia-branded smartphones, officially announced that after the Nokia 6 there will be more devices coming from the brand. However, there has been no official word on the names or specifications of the anticipated smartphones. With the upcoming MWC 2017 scheduled to take place from February 27 to March 2, we could see the Nokia 8 making its debut along with two more Nokia smartphones which are believed to be variants of the recently launched Nokia 6. Although the Nokia 6 was touted to be exclusive to China when it was launched earlier this month, it is expected to soon head to India with a price tag of Rs 9,999, though some other leaks suggests that it may be priced higher at around $250, which is Rs 17,000 approximately.

The Indian skipper MS Dhoni stepped down from limited-overs captaincy after staying at the helm for almost a decade. One of the finest captains to have ever played the game, he was the most successful captain ever in T20Is and the second most successful captain in ODIs.

This news came as a shock to the cricketing world as they expected him to continue till the Champions Trophy scheduled to take place in June this year. While the timing was apt, considering Virat Kohli’s growth as a leader in the traditional format, it was difficult to sink in the feeling that Captain Cool won’t be taking those marvel decisions behind the stumps anymore.

Just as the selection for the England ODI series was round the corner, the BCCI released a statement, “Mahendra Singh Dhoni has informed the BCCI, that he wishes to step down as the captain of the Indian cricket team from the One Day Internationals and the T20 Internationals formats of the game,”

However, he’s still available for selection as a wicketkeeper-batsman. This hints that he might be looking for a longer run, which is possibly the 2019 World Cup. He can now bat without any added pressure and focus on piling up runs on a consistent basis. But again, it’s Dhoni and at the end of the day, you’d expect the unexpected from him.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has resigned as India’s cricket captain. He was leading the Indian team in ODIs and T20 ever since he retired from Tests on December 30, 2016.
Just like he did with his Test retirement in Australia, Dhoni caught everyone by surprise by announcing his retirement from the limited overs format of the game.
A man who has won virtually every international silverware, Dhoni was keen to lead India in the ICC Champions Trophy in UK in June this year.
That honour should automatically go to Test captain Virat Kohli, who was recently named captain of ICCODI Team of the Year, 2016.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni informed the BCCI that he wished to step down as the captain of the Indian cricket team from the limited overs formats of the game, said a statement from the Board. The 35-year-old from Ranchi played 283 ODIs and 199 of them as captain.
After Ricky Ponting and Stephen Fleming, Mahendra Singh Dhoni has played the third highest number of ODIs as skipper of the Indian cricket team.

Lineage OS gets a new logo, to start 2017 after the death of CyanogenMod

Lineage OS, the new custom ROM initiative that will replace the now shut CyanogenMod has gained a new logo to kick off 2017. This development comes right after the project gained an official Gerrit account to help developers keep a track of the modifications being done to the code. Active development has already started with people making changes in real-time to the code. This pace of rapid development is sufficient to dispell the concerns regarding the survival of the popular ROM development community.

The new logo was uploaded on Lineage OS Github account and later the website was updated with the logo. The logo maintains the almost cyan-like colour from Cyanogen and has a symbolic representation of ‘fork’. The fork here is not the one you need to eat salad but instead, the fork here represents the forks, also known as variations to the original code or software or Operating System in this case.

This fork probably symbolises the split, yet the survival after the downfall of CyanogenMod or it could even represent the entire Android landscape in addition to the Linux development landscape.

Linux, just like Android has numerous distributions and forks made by independent developers or organisations according to their needs. This comes right after the team behind Lineage OS detailed their needs to have Build Slaves, Build and Build Mirrors for the project to reach the functioning capacity that it boasted during its CyanogenMod days. The company detailed that it will share the information when Weeklies or possibly nightlies will start.
