Recently, two videos from the CES 2017 claimed that Qualcomm used Nokia’s yet-to-be-announced smartphone to demo its chipset.

Just a few days after two videos claimed that Qualcomm had accidentally revealed the next Nokia smartphone while demoing its latest Snapdragon 835 processor, the chip-maker has officially dismissed the report. The two videos, shared by Total Tech, which were shot at the recently concluded CES 2017 claimed to give a glimpse of what was touted to be the Nokia 8 smartphone running the latest processor.

However, Qualcomm has issued a statement to NokiaMob, in which it says, “We do not disclose details of our reference design. We’ve seen a few stories rumouring what we demonstrated in our CES booth to be a Nokia device, those reports are not accurate, our 835 demos were on our own reference design devices which we use to demo our Snapdragon SoC’s every year.”

With such a clear response that it was indeed a reference design and not a final product, the videos stand false at the moment. Nonetheless, one needs to take both sides of the story with a pinch of salt because if it is a reference design, it still has the possibility of turning into a final product.

The particular videos in question focused on the camera prowess of the purported Nokia 8 aka Nokia Supreme smartphone. In one video, the smartphone is said to feature a 24-megapixel camera with OIS and EIS support. The flagship smartphone is further claimed to come in a variant that will house a Snapdragon 821 chipset and a lesser megapixel camera. The second video goes on to talk about how the latest EIS 3.0 with the newer chipset offers more stability and lag-free camera recording capabilities. If the speculations are to be believed, the Nokia 8 could feature two front speakers, Super AMOLED quad HD display.

Earlier reports indicated that the rumored Nokia 8 smartphone could be the company’s response to high-end smartphones from the likes of Samsung and Apple. It is speculated that the Nokia 8, from the company’s first set of Android smartphones, could come with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage with option to further take up the storage.

HMD Global, which will now be selling and marketing Nokia-branded smartphones, officially announced that after the Nokia 6 there will be more devices coming from the brand. However, there has been no official word on the names or specifications of the anticipated smartphones. With the upcoming MWC 2017 scheduled to take place from February 27 to March 2, we could see the Nokia 8 making its debut along with two more Nokia smartphones which are believed to be variants of the recently launched Nokia 6. Although the Nokia 6 was touted to be exclusive to China when it was launched earlier this month, it is expected to soon head to India with a price tag of Rs 9,999, though some other leaks suggests that it may be priced higher at around $250, which is Rs 17,000 approximately.
